Timing Belt & Water Pump Service

On an interference engine a snapped timing belt bends valves and turns a maintenance item into an engine rebuild. Replacement is mileage-based, not symptom-based — there is rarely a warning first. This is especially critical for many Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru and Mazda interference engines.

Because most of the labor is access, we replace the water pump, tensioner, idlers and front seals at the same time. Doing them separately means paying the same labor twice.

Timing Belt & Water Pump Service being performed at Murrieta Smog Star in Murrieta

Questions

Straight answers

How do I know if my engine has a belt or a chain?

Tell us the year, make and engine and we will confirm. Chains normally last the life of the engine; belts are on a schedule.

Do I really need the water pump too?

On belt-driven pumps, yes. The pump costs a fraction of the labor already being performed.

What happens if it breaks?

On an interference engine, bent valves and often a cylinder head rebuild.
